Ways to Reduce your Homes Insurance

November 29, 2011

Throughout Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Kiawah, Seabrook, Folly Beach, Mount Pleasant, and most of the Charleston tri-county significant wind damage to your home is a very serious possibility.Trust me so do your insurance providers. That risk is why we on the coast have to pay for an additional wind and hail policy when others inland do not, but there are ways you can keep that expense to a minimum.

Insurance providers understandably are not very comfortable providing home insurance to anyone living in a high risk area, but there are some factors you can do to help reduce your premiums.

You may qualify for a discount on your home owners insurance as well as the wind and hail portion. To qualify you must submit an inspection form from a state certified wind mitigation inspector, licensed contractor,  building inspector, architect, or engineer, legally  validating and identifying the existence of any wind  mitigation measures, such as:

1.) Roof Shape

2.) Roof deck attachment – Length and type of nails

3.) Roof Covering

4.) Roof to wall connections – Strapping

5.) Age of your home’s construction and materials used.

If you have a hip roofpermanently installed, approved shutters for windows and doors or any of the above credits you may qualify for discounts on the wind portion of your insurance policy. A hip roof is the best roof shape when building a home that will keep your home owners insurance cost down. Insurance providers prefer this type of design over all the others.
